Millions now maintain relationships with AI companions that never argue, never leave, and never quite exist; an engineer examines the comfort and its cost
PORTUGAL — The fastest-growing corner of the "relationship" market in 2026 is not a dating app at all. It is the AI companion — a chatbot, often customizable in personality and appearance, that users text, confide in, and increasingly describe as a boyfriend, girlfriend, or partner. Millions have one. The companion remembers everything, is available always, never criticizes, never has a bad day, and never, ever leaves. As an engineer, I understand the appeal completely, and as a person, I find it one of the more quietly alarming developments I cover.
Let me be fair to the appeal, because dismissing it helps no one. The AI companion offers something real people in a lonely age are genuinely starved for: attention without judgment, presence without risk, comfort without the terrifying vulnerability of another human's freedom. For someone battered by ghosting and rejection, a partner who is guaranteed never to reject you is not a joke. It is a balm. The loneliness it soothes is real, and the people reaching for it are not foolish — they are hurting, and the market found their wound.

But here is the engineering truth beneath the comfort: the AI companion works by removing the other person. Its frictionlessness comes precisely from the absence of a second free will — there's no one there to disappoint you because there's no one there at all. And that removal is also the removal of everything that makes human connection worth the difficulty: real reciprocity, genuine surprise, being chosen by someone who could have chosen otherwise. A relationship with no possibility of loss is also a relationship with no possibility of love, in the full sense. The comfort is real. So is the emptiness underneath it.
