ATTACHMENT STYLES: THE FRAMEWORK THAT ATE DATING DISCOURSE

Anxious, avoidant, secure — a psychological theory escaped the clinic and became the lingua franca of modern dating; an engineer weighs its uses and abuses

PORTUGAL — Few psychological theories have escaped the academy and colonized everyday life as thoroughly as attachment theory. Once a niche framework about infant-caregiver bonds, it is now the lingua franca of dating: everyone knows their "style" (anxious, avoidant, or secure), diagnoses their exes', and narrates their romantic life in its vocabulary. As an engineer who respects a good model, I find this partly wonderful and partly a cautionary tale about what happens when a useful framework becomes a weapon.

First, the wonderful part, because the theory earns it. Attachment styles genuinely describe something real: people carry patterns from early relationships into adult ones, and understanding your own pattern — the anxious tendency to chase reassurance, the avoidant tendency to flee intimacy, the secure baseline of comfortable closeness — is authentically illuminating. It gives people language for dynamics that used to be invisible and inexplicable, and language is the first step to change. That is a real gift.

Now the cautionary part. A framework meant to build self-understanding has been widely repurposed as a tool for dismissal: "he's avoidant" as a diagnosis that excuses walking away without reflection; "she's anxious" as a label that pathologizes a normal desire for clarity. The theory becomes astrology with citations — a deterministic box you sort people into so you don't have to actually understand them. Worse, it lets people abdicate: "that's just my attachment style" as a defense of behavior rather than an invitation to grow. A model for understanding curdles into an excuse for not trying.
