INDUSTRY COMMISSIONS SURVEY OF ITS CUSTOMERS; CUSTOMERS TESTIFY AGAINST INDUSTRY

Fifty-three percent of singles report dating burnout in Match's own Singles in America research; the exhibit is entered into evidence

LAFAYETTE — Every year, the largest dating conglomerate in the world funds a survey of American singles, and every year this bureau reads it the way one reads a defendant's own diary. The recent edition, conducted with the Kinsey Institute and covered widely in the press: 53 percent of singles report dating burnout. Sixty-one percent believe dating profiles have become less authentic. These are not activist numbers. This is the industry polling its own customers and publishing the indictment with a nice cover design.

Let the founder in me say what the publisher in me is too polite to: when more than half of your market reports that the experience you sell exhausts them, and six in ten report that the humans on your platform no longer even seem like the humans they are, you do not have a marketing problem. Burnout is what happens when effort and outcome decouple — when a person invests hours and receives ambiguity as a dividend. Inauthenticity is what happens when a system rewards performance over declaration — when the profile is optimized for an algorithm's approval rather than a human's understanding. Both are downstream of the same missing sentence: here is what I actually want.
